Today In Elvis History: July 31
July 31, 1969: Elvis performed his first live concert since March 25, 1961. He opened a four-week engagement at the International Hotel in Las Vegas.
In 1969, Elvis was keen to resume regular live performing. He duly delivered 57 shows over four weeks at the hotel (now the Las Vegas Hilton), which had the largest showroom in the city. He had assembled some of the finest musicians, including an orchestra and gospel singers, for his band. His ’69 shows were largely successful. “Newsweek” magazine commented, “There are several unbelievable things about Elvis, but the most incredible is his staying power in a world where meteoric careers fade like shooting stars.” Elvis’ manager Colonel Parker’s negotiations with the hotel resulted in a five-year contract for Elvis to play each February and August, at a salary of $1 million per year.
Below, WATCH and ENJOY a medley of Elvis performing at the International Hotel in July 1969. He wasn’t quite fat Elvis, and his banter is pretty charming. At this stage of his life, he is kind of reminding me of my funny uncle. Check it out.
